Community Engagement, Competency-based Education and the Health Profession: Current Trends and National Funding Opportunities

Community involvement has always been at the core of socialization for health professionals; however, accrediting bodies and programs increasingly focus on developing disciplinary and professional competencies. This focus has implications for faculty to consider the implications of working in and with communities. In addition, funding sources now put community engagement and community partnerships as a core for program development in the health professions. Through this workshop participants will: • get up-to-date on cutting-edge best practices in teaching and research developed in and with communities to prepare future health professionals; • learn about national funding opportunities to advance faculty work in this area, including the efforts of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health; • network with local IU faculty currently integrating community engagement into their teaching and research.

Dr. Sherril Gelmon brings extensive experience through her teaching, research, and service as a leader in national organizations focused on civic engagement in higher education.

Eligible students are undergraduate degree-seeking juniors and seniors with a minimum cumulative        GPA of 3.0 who have completed a minimum of 56 credit hours applicable to her/his degree program; 25 or more of those hours must have been completed at the Indianapolis campus as of the Fall 09 semester.

Successful candidates for this award will have experience and/or performance in three categories:

• Scholastic achievement
• Collegiate and co-curricular activities
• Civic/community service

**December 2009 graduates are NOT eligible**

 

Students must accept their nomination, complete the application, and submit a letter of recommendation by February 10th. 

 

 

Students may be nominated by faculty, staff, or other students.  Students may also self-nominate.  Only one nomination is accepted per student.
